One rather large distinction: Cars are nearly a necessity in today’s world, and provide a utility that cannot be easily matched by other means. (including horses).

Now, non-street legal racecars on the other hand... They require expensive upkeep, specialized transport, private land for “exercise ”, and are effectively useless for transportation.  Sounds just like a horse to me.
